I picked some lilacs from the enormous bush behind our house to photograph yesterday. These photos were taken in natural light in the open shade of our front porch, with no reflector. The white backdrop and the white siding on my house was enough to bounce light back onto the flowers.
I made the small background myself using wooden slats (available at places like Lowe’s Home Improvement) that I painted with a sample of Valspar Ultra White paint. (Less than $3, also at Lowe’s.) I keep the slats separated for easy storage & transport.
I left the other side natural for a while, until I eventually painted them a mixture of two Valspar colors–deep blue sea and black. I used them in the photo below with the lemons. Just five slats were enough for the background of this image, too–you don’t need to cover a lot of space for close-up still life shots.
Easy peasy. ;)
